THE AUTHORS

BERNARDO STROZZI

He joined the Capuchins’ Order when he was only 17 and strove for a devotional painting style, influenced by the mannerism of Lombardy. In 1608 he was forced to leave the Order to help his family. From 1614 till 1621 he obtained an appointment as engineer in the harbour but his painting abilities continued to reach more and more prestige. Commissions such as the fresco of the Palazzo Doria is symbol of Caravaggio’s and Rubens’ influences. In 1630 for legal problems he moved to Venice where he became Bishop (1635). Venice made him change the use of his painting colours into a refined brightness which characterizes his mature style. “Christ Carrying the Cross”, “St. Francesco”, “the Lamented Christ’s death” and other works of his shop are exhibited in the Art Gallery.
